Azerbaijan: The Next Front in the Iran-Israel Shadow War?

The Associated Press reports that a foiled plot to assassinate Israeli targets in Azerbaijan might make the central Asian country the latest front in a proxy war between Israel and Iran. Haaretz reports that Azerbaijan's officials arrested activists affiliated with Iranian intelligence and Hezbollah on suspicion that they were planning to attack Israelis in the city of Baku. The A.P. has an in-depth report investigating whether the attack was organized by Iran's intelligence service as payback for the slaying of several Iranians linked to the nuclear program. Iran denies any involvement in the plot, but if they did have their hand in it, it would add Azerbaijan to the growing list of countries -- Thailand, India, and Georgia -- where a clandestine conflict of sorts is likely being fought.
