AYSO soccer looks to expand programs turning Creal Complex over to Coldwater Township

COLDWATER TWP. — American Youth Soccer Organization Region 1289 and Coldwater Township mutually decided to redraft a 25-year contract signed in 2005 for the operation of the Creal Soccer Complex.

The change will allow AYSO to explore new programs while the township takes over the operation and maintenance of the rental hall and complex.

AYSO Regional Commissioner Mike Clark said the 2024 spring program with 70 volunteers has 350 kids signed up for league play, which begins April 1.

The coed programs serve kids ages 19 and under with a starter program for kids five and under.

Clark added, "We're starting an adult league, a brand new program, hopefully in the fall," if volunteers are available.

Clark said without the worry of operating the facility, the AYSO board can explore a traveling team option. "We want to be able to offer soccer to everyone in the county."

As a special education teacher, Clark said, "We want to make soccer affordable and available to everybody who wants to play regardless of their ability, or disability."

Why change the contract?

Clark said the original idea was for AYSO to rent out the building to pay for the complex's maintenance.

"Unfortunately, expenses and the cost surpassed the rental income by a lot," Clark said. "We're all volunteers so we have trouble keeping up with all the maintenance."

The township paved the parking lot, surrounded the complex with a walking track, and put in a sound system.

The building needs some work on the air conditioning, carpet, and windows sealed. "Really, it's normal maintenance on a 20 year old house, so nothing bad," Clark said.

Township clerk Dianne Morrison said the change "Is beneficial for both of us," with the township office open weekdays.

Township supervisor Don Rogers said, "Other than when they have games, practices and tournaments scheduled, it will be open to the public as a public park."

History of the Creal Center Soccer Complex

The township created the recreational facility by getting the legislature to deed 18 acres of Florence Crane Prison property to the township in 2004.

The $600,000 complex on the corner of Marshall Road and State Street came together in 2001 when Sunrise Rotary agreed to find money for the construction of a building with restrooms, a concession stand, a patio, and a meeting room that can hold up to 100 people.

Hal and Lillian Creel agreed to match dollar for dollar all cash contributions and pledges up to $300,000.
