Axelrod, Scarborough Compromise on Mustache Bet

Obama senior adviser David Axelrod and MSNBC host Joe Scarborough settled their "mustache bet" on the election, compromising on large donations to help epilepsy research.

Because it currently looks like Florida is going the president’s way -- though the state has not formally been called -- Scarborough would likely have had to grow a mustache to satisfy a wager he made with Axelrod on MSNBC's Morning Joe prior to the election.

But on Thursday, the two men agreed to a compromise. Scarborough will not only donate $10,000 to epilepsy research, but will also host a fundraiser to raise $1 million for the cause and, for kicks, wear a fake mustache during the event.

The issue is dear to Axelrod’s heart, because his daughter, Lauren, has fought epilepsy her entire life. “Epilepsy research is the cause of my life,” Axelrod said on Morning Joe on Thursday.

Said Scarborough: “I'm going to give you $10,000 despite the fact that I think the recount may change things... I'm a man with a big heart.”

After several members of the show’s panel, including co-host Mika Brzezinski and New York magazine's John Heilemann, agreed to donate money to the cause, Axelrod thanked them.

“Thank you so much, all of you, for all of your support for curing epilepsy,” he said. “Your friendship means more than I can ever say.”
