How to avoid scams when buying home solar panels in New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – If you’re looking to add solar panels to your home, it’s important to avoid getting stuck in a bad deal. Now, New Mexico’s attorney general is offering tips and advice to stay safe while shopping for solar systems.

The state’s attorney general is tasked with keeping consumers safe. As part of that work, their office has published a guide for solar purchases.

“Most of rooftop solar sales are conducted door-to-door. This means that you’re likely to encounter high-pressure sales tactics. Resist the temptation to say yes right then and there,” the attorney general’s office says in their guide.

New Mexico often offers tax incentives for solar upgrades, but unscrupulous salespeople can take advantage of that to pressure consumers into a deal. “Be wary of time-sensitive deals,” the guide says. “Deadlines to receive tax-benefits are one thing, promotions are another. Watch out for sales tactics that pressure you into committing to a contract immediately.”

If you do find yourself stuck in a bad deal, the attorney general’s office recommends you document everything, including all emails and phone calls. If the solar company isn’t being responsive when you present your concerns, you can contact the Federal Trade Commission, Department of Justice, the Better Business bureau, or the New Mexico Department of Justice.
