Avoca man dead, three people injured after crash in Moosic parking lot

Jul. 13—MOOSIC — A 70-year-old Avoca man died Thursday after he was hit by a car during a multi-vehicle crash in the parking lot of a borough supermarket, authorities said.

Three other people, including a second pedestrian and the two people in the vehicle that struck her and the other victim, were injured.

The crash happened around 10:50 a.m. in the parking lot of Gerrity's, 4015 Birney Ave., Police Chief Rick Janesko said.

All four individuals involved were taken to Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton.

Borough police did not release the names of any of the victims. The crash remained under investigation by police.

Lackawanna County Coroner Tim Rowland confirmed the Avoca man, who Janesko had previously said was critically injured in the crash, died at GCMC on Thursday afternoon.

The police chief said the other pedestrian was a woman who was loading groceries into her vehicle in the supermarket's parking lot when she was hit.

A section of the lot remained cordoned off for more than two hours after the crash while police attempted to sort out what happened. A state police accident reconstruction unit arrived on scene around 11:45 a.m. to assist with the investigation.

Two orange cones sat on either side of a single shoe lying in the parking lot.

The car that hit the two pedestrians, a red sedan, had a smashed windshield and heavy front-end damage. The driver and passenger in that car were injured, Janesko said.

After striking the pedestrians, the red sedan collided with a parked vehicle, pushing it into another parked vehicle, the chief said.
