Authorities release details of Deer Lake boat rescue

ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJMN) – An evening in a canoe on the waters of Deer Lake in Ishpeming turned into a rescue operation on Wednesday evening.

According to the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, authorities were called out to Deer Lake just after 8:30 p.m. for reports of an overturned canoe approximately 400 yards from shore. Four people were reported in the water.

Two of those in the water had jumped in to help their friends who had been in the canoe. The friends who jumped in the water had life jackets on and swam back to shore.

The Sheriff’s Department put a boat in the water to rescue the remaining two people. All four were taken to Bell Hospital to be checked out for hypothermia.

Authorities shared details of the rescue and also issued a reminder that lifejackets should be worn at all times while on the water. They also stressed the importance of letting someone else know where you will be.
