Authorities investigate two crashes on I-10 eastbound, one fatal

(KLFY)– Two separate crashes occurred on I-10 eastbound, near Rayne Thursday evening, with one of them being deadly, according to Louisiana State Police.

State Police said there was a deadly crash involving a passenger car and an 18-wheeler at mile marker 94 that led to one lane being blocked.

Louisiana State Police Troop I was notified at 4 p.m. Thursday of a two-vehicle crash on I-10 eastbound near mile marker 94 (between Duson and Scott). The crash claimed the life of 65-year-old Jude Mae Jefferson of Houston, Texas.

State Police said a 2016 Freightliner 18-wheeler was being driven east on I-10 when the driver began to slow down due to traffic congestion. At the same time, Jefferson was driving a 2022 Chevrolet Malibu following behind the 18-wheeler. For reasons still under investigation, Jefferson’s Malibu struck the rear of the 18-wheeler. After impact, both vehicles came to a stop in the right lane of I-10.

Jefferson, despite being properly restrained, died at the scene. The driver of the 18-wheeler was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Standard toxicology results are pending from both drivers and this crash remains under investigation.
