Authorities identify five killed from near head-on collision in Wisconsin

WEST POINT, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities in central Wisconsin have released the identities of the five people killed in a near head-on collision on State Highway 60 on Sunday.

According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, the operator of the Chevrolet truck was identified as 70-year-old Robin Purcell from Prairie Du Sac.

For the Lincoln, the driver was identified as a 17-year-old girl from Merrimac, and the passengers were 42-year-old Shain Scoville from Merrimac, 26-year-old Kaiyzer Ballweg of Sauk City, and 62-year-old Julie Scoville from Blue Mounds.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the Lincoln crossed the centerline and hit the pickup nearly head-on. It was reported to be raining at the time of the crash, but it is unknown if weather played a factor.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office says that failure to use headlights and wear seatbelts are factors in this crash.

“While this is a tragic incident that will have a lasting impact on many of those in our community, it’s important to remember that seatbelts can save lives, and state law requires vehicle operators to have their headlights on while driving in inclement weather and times of reduced visibility,” concluded Columbia County Sheriff Roger Brandner.

Authorities continue to investigate this fatal crash.
