Author to discuss book 'We Fought at Gettysburg'

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – With chapters such as “Voices from the First Day of Battle,” “The Final Struggle” and “Broken Bodies and Wounded Men,” author and educator Carolyn Ivanoff provides details about one of the Civil War’s most important battles in her book “We Fought at Gettysburg: Firsthand Accounts by the Survivors of the 17th Connecticut Volunteer.”

Ivanoff will delve into the subject during a free presentation Tuesday at the Cambria County Library, 248 Main Street, downtown Johnstown.

The event, which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., is sponsored by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Mary R. Campbell Camp No. 16 Auxiliary, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Col. Jacob M. Campbell Camp No. 14, and the library.

Ivanoff will be the 10th speaker in the organizations’ ongoing Civil War Series.

“It should be interesting,” Judy Bako, the auxiliary’s patriotic instructor, said. “We haven’t had anybody talk like that to focus in on that part of the war.”

Copies of “We Fought at Gettysburg” will be available for purchase.

The book is described at amazon.com: “William H. Warren dedicated his life to compiling the accounts of his comrades in the 17th Connecticut.

“Many are published here for the first time. These are the words of those who lived through the trauma of combat and survived to write about it. Many of these men were wounded, taken prisoner, lost friends, and suffered themselves on this great battlefield of the war.

“These men tell what they experienced at Gettysburg in their own words. They describe what they saw, thought, and felt on the battlefield. Their story is told here through fascinating firsthand accounts, numerous photographs, including a photographic index of the regiment, and maps by Phil Laino.”
