Austin-East Magnet High School principal moves to a new job supporting students at KCS

Austin-East Magnet High School principal Tammi Campbell is moving to a new Knox County Schools administrative position created to enhance the connection between schools, students and their families.

The new job is called director of student and family supports, KCS spokeswoman Carly Harrington told Knox News. Campbell will oversee the enrollment office, the ombudsman's office and the welcome center, which serves families with limited or no English-speaking parents or guardians.

She will be "charged with enhancing student and family engagement and facilitating high-quality, intentional support between students, families and Knox County Schools staff," according to the job description. She will oversee student transfers and enrollment-related disputes. She was picked from a pool of 21 applicants.

Campbell will report to Assistant Superintendent of Strategy Kori Lautner. She will begin her new position the beginning of June, Harrington said. Her salary for the 2024-2025 school year will be about $126,500, Harrington said. Her previous salary as principal was a little over $124,000.

The superintendent has not named a new principal for Austin-East.

Campbell has served as principal for three years and is a graduate of the school. She took charge as students and teachers navigated grief from losing five students to gun violence.

She also served as the district's ombudsman for four years and was a project GRAD facilitator for seven years.

Campbell did not respond to a request for comment.
