‘Austin Against Hate’ dashboard now active, tracking hate crime statistics

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The City of Austin said it launched a new dashboard aimed at bringing attention to hate crime numbers in the city.

The city said the ‘Austin Against Hate Community Data Dashboard‘ would keep track of when and where reported hate crimes have happened around Austin since 2017.

The dashboard is part of the We All Belong anti-hate campaign, an initiative focused on education and outreach.

According to the city, the dashboard was designed to help people understand hate crimes in Austin in context with how acts of hate and bias influence public sentiment.

“Use the layers to explore Austin Police Report Data about where hate crimes where hate crimes have been reported in Austin to compare and contrast with resident survey data examining the community’s overall sense of safety regarding hate crimes and trust in the City’s response,” the dashboard said.

In terms of numbers, the dashboard reported that over the last seven years, there were 191 hate crimes around the Austin metro area, with 2023 having the most incidents at 51 while 2019 had the least at 12.

So far in 2024, there have been four hate crimes reported, mainly in and around the downtown Austin area.

The campaign plans to increase its advertising around town this year and even create a mural at city hall.
