Augusta voters share thoughts on ballot for District 9

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – It’s the last week of early voting for next week’s election in Augusta.

This year five commissioners are on the ballot, and one of those includes the seat for Super District 9.

Voters in that super-district are choosing between incumbent Francine Scott, and former commissioner Marion Williams.

The super-district consists of Districts 1, 2, 4, and 5.

Betty Griffin is one voter who has lived in that area her entire life–but recent changes in the area have caught her eye.

“The civic center changed, that’s good. A lot more cleaning around in the community as far as the sidewalks and stuff, I think that was good too. A lot of changes,” said Griffin.

But other voters say bigger changes need to be made.

“I think all the commission needs to be pepped up a little bit. We need some speed bumps in these neighborhoods–and the commissioners ain’t doing nothing. I had to spend $25,000 to put a fence around my yard to keep my grandkids safe,” said Lawerance Bryant.

Commissioner Scott is finishing her four-year term; she was elected back in 2021.

But Williams served two eight-year terms representing District 9.

While voters choosing Scott didn’t go on camera, those supporting Williams say the third time will be a charm.

“He’s been in there more years, more experience. He knows a lot of people, and I think he’ll get some things done,” said Griffin.

“I think he deserves one more shot. He’s got about one more tank of gas left. You know if Biden can do it at his age, Marion Williams can do it at his age,” Bryant said.

“He goes at it harder. He tries to make sure that people are treated fair and everything across the board. And if he sees stuff wrong, he tries to make it right for everybody.”

The last day for early voting is this Friday, May 17th.

The Municipal Building is one of four sites voters can come to—including Diamond Lakes, Warren Road, and the Charles Evans Center on Highland.

That election and Georgia’s statewide primary election is next Tuesday, May 21st.
