Augusta Unites to Combat Cancer: Announcing Unite in the Fight Against Cancer 2024

Augusta, GA (March 13, 2024) – It is time to lace up those sneakers, don your boldest colors, and channel your inner superhero because the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University is calling all champions to join the fight against cancer at the annual “Unite in the Fight Against Cancer” fundraiser. It is an event designed to bring the community together in a shared goal of bringing awareness to all forms of cancer.

“Unite in the Fight Against Cancer is not just a walk; it is a powerful symbol of our community’s unwavering commitment to stand together against cancer,” said Dr. Jorge Cortes, director of the Georgia Cancer Center. “By joining us in this event, you are not just taking steps – you are taking a stand. Every dollar raised and every participant who joins us amplifies our collective voice in the battle against this disease. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of cancer patients, supporting vital projects that enhance their journey and bring hope to countless families.”

Unite in the Fight Against Cancer is not just about breaking a sweat; it is about breaking barriers and making a real difference in the lives of those fighting this formidable foe. With each stride, participants will be raising vital funds to support groundbreaking projects aimed at enhancing the journey of cancer patients visiting the Georgia Cancer Center. From innovative therapies to compassionate care, every dollar raised fuels projects designed to uplift and empower patients during their cancer journey. Examples of past funded projects include a mental health initiative for cancer patients struggling with impact of their illness, art supplies for pediatric patients receiving radiation therapy, funding for wigs or prostheses for self-pay breast cancer patients, tablets for movies or music for ease of treatment time in the hospital setting, and equipment which allows staff to better access a patient’s veins for IV fluids.

“I am truly excited about the Unite in the Fight Against Cancer event,” said Dr. Anand P. Jillella, J. Harold Harrison, MD, Distinguished University Chair in Medical Oncology at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. “This annual gathering not only highlights the strength of our community but also underscores the collective power we possess to make a lasting impact on cancer care. Participating in this one-mile walk is not just about the physical steps; it is a stride towards hope, unity, and progress.”

Unite in the Fight Against Cancer 2024 will take place from 8-11am on Saturday, May 4, 2023 at the Georgia Cancer Center, starting at the M. Bert Storey Research Building at 1410 Laney Walker Blvd. Participants can register for the one-mile walk which also serves something like a tour, passing each of the locations included in the Georgia Cancer Center campus footprint: research, hospital care, pediatric care, sickle cell care, infusion centers, radiation therapy, and outpatient services. This walk is designed to be inclusive for everyone who wants to join; individuals and teams determine their own fundraising goal, with no fundraising minimum.
