Augusta Regional Airport Masters preparation and more

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Improvements are coming to Augusta Regional Airport just in time for the Masters.

Last year, the Airport received more than half a million dollars for improvements on the airport from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Some of those improvements are already in use by passengers, while others like Gates three and four will be mostly ready come Masters.

“That whole project will be about 95% done by Masters. It’ll just be some punch-less items afterwards,” Augusta Regional Airport Assistant Director of Marketing and Public Relations Lauren Smith said.

The Masters might just be more than a month away, but Augusta Regional Airport has been making improvements year-round, and now, they’re ready to serve all passengers including Masters patrons.

“We actually have the two additional jet bridges available on property, and they’re being installed right now, so they will be operational for Masters,” Smith said. “With that, there won’t be any ground boarding for Masters, and the facility will be expanded little bit so we can have all the additional space for all the Patrons coming through”

Airport staff say they’re all hands-on deck as they are expecting larger numbers of patrons.

“This year, both airlines added multiple destinations for masters. So, I believe Wednesday, we’re gonna have about 39 flights that day– which is extremely busy for us– and this year Delta actually added a bunch of different direct flights. So, we’re gonna see a large increase of passenger traffic this year, and the airlines are getting ready, and TSA, and ourselves as well, we’re bringing in additional staff to make sure we can accommodate those numbers,” Smith said.

And if you’re someone wanting to rent a car after landing in the Garden City, your rental process remains the same, but the airport has implemented a new rental upgrade.

“We have a new car rental facility, which is actually across the street from the main airport property, and that facility will house the rental cars. It is a maintenance bay, car wash station, and fueling station for them,” Smith said.

During the monthly aviation agenda meeting, members discussed performance accomplishments and even more new expected additions to the airport.

“We’re gonna embark on a new TSA expansion project here, soon, to accommodate additional growth as well, and the airlines take that all into consideration as well. The more people use the airport, the more they will take note,” Smith said.

Airport staff say they’re excited for all the new projects coming to fruition and those that are still in the works and are looking forward to the Masters rush.
