Augusta plane crash 911 calls released

AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF) – 911 calls released that paint a picture of the aftermath of a plane crash in the Forrest Hills/ Summerville area of Augusta.

The pilot, Jason Mckenzie, was killed in the crash. The neighborhood was left in shock.

The typically quiet start to a day in the Summerville neighborhood of Augusta was cast into chaos on May 2nd.

“We have a crashed plane in our yard which is on fire,” one neighbor explained to Dispatch.

While the explosion shook the neighborhood, smoke and fire could be seen from a distance.

“About a block away I just heard a giant explosion and I see fire.”

“Between Walton Way and Wrightsboro Road headed toward the Daniel Field airport.”

Neighbors close to the site were rendered helpless due to the size of the fire and destruction.. only capable of relaying as many details as possible to dispatchers.

“There’s a plane crash in my front yard,” explains a caller.

A Dispatcher asks, “is anyone injured?”

The caller replies, “somebody’s in the plane. Yea.”

The Dispatcher continues, “what kind of plane is it or what does it look like?”

The caller says, “it’s a small beechcraft.”

One passerby appears to have narrowly escaped being hit in her vehicle.

“My co-worker just came to work and she said a plane might have crashed near Walton Way and Wrightsboro Road. She said because it almost hit her car.”

It’s been a week since the crash. The plane is gone. The smoke has cleared. The chaos has calmed. Tut the memory of what happened that day, and the life lost, will not be forgotten anytime soon.

“I think a plane just crashed really close to our house.”

The Dispatcher replies, “Yes ma’am. We’ve got all responders in route. Lights and sirens. Was your house hit?”

The caller responds, “no.”

“Ok. Thank God! Ok Ma’am. Thank you,” says the Dispatcher.

The NTSB released its preliminary report Thursday afternoon. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
