Plans for a new pedestrian bridge connecting the River Watch Parkway side of the Augusta Canal to the Canal Trail are moving forward.

On Tuesday, the city’s Engineering and Environmental Services Committee will consider accepting $500,000 in Georgia Department of Transportation funds for the project, according to information in the committee’s agenda.

The plan also calls for a new multi-use trail that begins by the Village at Riverwatch and meanders by the recently dredged Lake Warren to the new 275-foot bridge.

The project is expected to cost about $2 million.

The funds allocated by the state is the first step toward receiving other possible assistance from state and maybe federal sources.
