Augusta Canal Single-Track bike trail re-opened

AUGUSTA (WJBF) – The Augusta Canal Single-Track bike trail has existed since the 1990s. It has recently reopened after some upgrades.

“The single track was already here, but when a lot of the pond dredging went on a few years ago,” said Tyler Snead, Executive Director of the Augusta Canal Authority. “It basically destroyed part of the trail. This trail is just so convenient to people to ride on weeknights and weekdays without having to drive 30 – 45 minutes somewhere. So, we knew we had to repair it.”

A ribbon cutting Sunday marked the occasion, with more than 50 bikers there to celebrate.

“With it being so local to everyone here, especially me. It’s five minutes down the road from the house,” said Chandler Burrell, Bike Rider. “It’s something that I’m going to be able to ride almost every day of the week. People that are just starting to ride or people that have been riding for years they are going to be able to come and enjoy the area and progress in their skills.”

The trail has new features that make the experience unique to each rider, Including new trails for cyclists of different levels.

“We have a little bit of the old-school hand-built section mixed with a little bit of the new-school flow, and as an added bonus, we were able to create this free ride section for the younger generation,” said Jake Veriato, President of SORBA CSRA.

Organizers say community support helped them get the trail reopened after three years.

“This has been a huge community project. No one person has made this happen. It’s just all of us,” said Drew Jordan, who owns Andy Jordan’s Bicycle Warehouse. “Working together as a community to raise the funds, to put the volunteer work in, and to revitalize this gem that we have.”
