Audit: Wisconsin agencies spent nearly $13 billion in federal money in 2011-12
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A new report says Wisconsin state agencies spent nearly $13 billion in federal assistance dollars in fiscal year 2011-12.
The Legislative Audit Bureau's report Thursday found the agencies administered $12.9 billion in federal dollars through more than 2,000 federal programs and grants.
The bureau concluded that state agencies have generally complied with federal requirements for using the money.
However, auditors noted it appears the Department of Administration and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation didn't follow requirements for awarding community development block grants. The Department of Children and Families continues to overcharge the federal government for money the agency divvies out to parents of adopted children. And the Department of Transportation is still working to correct reporting and record-keeping problems in administering grants to help the elderly, disabled and poor get around.
