Audi's Redesigned Five-Door S5 Sportback Is a Mini A7
A few months ago, Audi revealed the redesigned A5 and the sportier S5. Neither car looked wildly different than the previous generations, but considering how attractive they already were. But what was noticeably absent was a five-door version-the Sportback to use Audi's terminology. Now it's finally shown its face ahead of its Paris Motor Show debut.
Unsurprisingly, it looks a lot like an A5/S5 with more doors. That's to be expected of the five-door version of the two-door version of the four-door Audi A4/S4. And as you would also expect, Audi didn't mess with the powertrain options, either.
That means the S5 Sportback (the one we're obviously most interested in) still makes 345 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. The automaker claims that's good for a 4.7-second run to 62 mph, which is admirably quick for a daily driver but also no different than the regular S5.
The real draw, however, is towards the rear. Like the Audi A7, the A5 Sportback has a hatch, not a trunk. Lift the back, and there's a huge, easy-to-load cargo area. So while you're largely paying for the Sportback's curvy good looks, it also comes with an added element of practicality.
But the biggest question we have is whether or not it will come to the States. Previously, we reported that it was likely. When we reached out to Audi for comment, though, Mark Dahncke their head of communications said "a decision has not been made to bring the Sportback to the US at this time."
Car and Driver reports, however, that both A5 and S5 Sportbacks will make it to the U.S. in early 2017 with a price of $45,000 for the A5 and $55,000 for the S5.
Hopefully that report is accurate because, well, we want our baby S7.
