Audi e-Tron GT Will Be a Mission E-Based Four-Door
Former Audi Sport head Stefan Winkelmann said last year that the performance sub-brand would eventually launch its own all-electric car. At its annual press conference today, Audi made that car, the e-Tron GT, official, promising a 2020 arrival. It'll be based on the upcoming Porsche Mission E and it's set to be Audi's third all-electric model.
Later this year, we'll see the e-Tron Quattro, an electric SUV-ish thing that's more-or-less Audi's answer to the Tesla Model X. Not long after, Audi will release the fastback e-Tron Sportback as a sportier companion to the Quattro. Audi was light on details regarding the e-Tron GT, releasing the teaser sketch you see above and confirming that it'll be a four-seater.
While we know it'll ride on the same Porsche-developed platform as the Mission E-called J1-we don't know if the two cars will share any major drivetrain components. Audi is working on a three-motor system with an electric motor at each rear wheel, which allows for advanced torque vectoring capabilities. It'd be a surprise not to see this system appear on the e-Tron GT, but that said, the Mission E will use just one motor per axle.
Audi said that the GT will be the flagship for its e-Tron brand, and it'll be built alongside other EVs at its Böllinger Höfe plant near its main manufacturing site at Neckersalum.
"We interpret sportiness very progressively with our fully electric e-tron GT, and this is how we will take our high-performance brand Audi Sport into the future," said Audi chief Rupert Stadler in a statement.
Before the car was confirmed officially, we reported that the e-Tron GT will have a Bentley sibling too. Audi and Porsche are also working on an additional EV platform, called Premium Platform Electric (PPE), but we won't see cars that ride on that platform until 2021.
Audi promised that it'd offer over 20 electrified cars by 2025, so expect a lot of news like this to come.
