The Audi Q2’s production has begun at the carmaker’s main plant in Ingolstadt, Germany. The small SUV had made its world premiere at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show and the company will soon start taking orders for the vehicle.

Audi’s Ingolstadt facility is their biggest production plant and Europe’s second largest car manufacturing location. It is responsible for assembling more than 5,00,000 cars in a year, meaning a new car is made every 30 seconds. And now to increase its capacity, the manufacturer has installed a fully automatic module store for the drivetrain on the assembly line. The total output per day is now expected to be close to 450 units.

The Audi Q2 accompanies the A3 on its assembly line, where it goes through the body shop, paint shop and assembly process. Underpinned by the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, the Audi Q2 is the smallest SUV in the carmaker’s line-up. It features Audi’s latest technology, equipment and features and will be offered in a choice of six different engines. This line-up includes three TFSI petrol mills and three TDI diesel units with power outputs ranging from 116bhp to 190bhp. Transmission options will include a six-speed manual and a seven-speed S-tronic dual clutch.

Albert Mayer, plant director, Audi site, Ingolstadt, said, “The start of series production of a new model is always a great challenge and something special for a plant and its employees. We are proud to be building the Audi Q2, the Q-family entry model, here in Ingolstadt for the world market.”

We can expect Audi to bring the Q2 to India in 2017, where it will be slotted below the Q3 in the Q family of Audi cars. It is expected to be powered by the 2.0-litre diesel motor for the Indian market and might be priced between Rs 26-32 lakh.
