Auction of lunch with Warren Buffett starts Sunday

Online auction of private lunch with Buffett starts Sunday, raises money for Calif. charity

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- The annual auction of a private lunch with billionaire Warren Buffett starts Sunday, but the bidding doesn't usually reach astronomical levels until later in the event.

The winning bids have topped $2 million for five years, and last year's winner paid $3,456,789.

Buffett is the 82-year-old chairman and CEO of Omaha, Neb.-based Berkshire Hathaway and a prominent philanthropist.

All the proceeds from the eBay auction go to the Glide Foundation, which provides social services to the poor and homeless in San Francisco.

Bidding continues until 9:30 p.m. Friday.

The winner can invite up to seven friends to join the lunch at Smith & Wollensky steakhouse in New York City. But some past winners have remained anonymous and dined with Buffett privately in Omaha.
