Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hasn’t exactly been the most popular figure at Borussia Dortmund in recent months. He has, in various ways, tried to force himself through the club’s exit door.

And you know what? He’s not afraid to admit that.

Now that he finally does have his move – to Arsenal, as the most expensive player in club history – the 28-year-old striker has copped to his faults. He’s issuing a genuine apology. And he’s laughing at himself all at the same time.

Aubameyang posted a refreshingly honest and genuine farewell message on his Instagram account Wednesday, hours after his unveiling in London. A translation, and the original post, are below.

Aubameyang admitted up front that he wanted out five months ago. “Maybe it wasn’t the best way to go about it but everyone knows that Auba is crazy – and yes, I’m a crazy boy, hahahaha!” he wrote.

He said sorry. He said he’d “made a mistake.” But “never in bad faith,” he clarified, before thanking everybody associated with his now-former club.

It’s a far cry from the stiff, corporate farewells that players often issue. The ones that have their PR people’s or agents’ hands all over them. And it’s so much better that way.
