ATV riders rescued after falling 400 feet off cliff

Two people on an ATV had to be rescued after crashing 400 feet over the side of the road late Sunday night.

According to search and rescue first responder, Mike Leum, the side-by-side ATV careened over the side of Kagel Canyon Road near L.A.’s Lake View Terrace neighborhood at 11 p.m.

Los Angeles County Fire Department crews quickly arrived at the scene and airlifted the two victims. They were assisted on the ground by Montrose Search and Rescue, Leum said.

A video posted to social media by Leum depicts the two people being hoisted into the awaiting helicopter. More footage posted by Leum shows another helicopter hovering closer to the ground and using a spotlight to look for the victims.

Both ATV riders survived the crash. According to LASD officials, one of them was listed in critical condition while the other was stable.

CHP took over the investigation because it was a reported traffic collision, LASD said.
