Attorney says potential buyer in line for Serenity Towers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — On Tuesday, a representative for the embattled Serenity Towers appeared in Court, claiming that there could be a potential buyer of the senior high rise.

The City of Memphis recently filed a petition to have Serenity Towers declared a chronic nuisance, but today in court, an attorney said there could be a potential buyer for the property.

City of Memphis files lawsuit against Serenity Towers and Millennia

Outside Shelby County Environmental Court this afternoon, the attorney for Serenity Towers did not answer our repeated request for a statement to address those living in the taxpayer-funded dilapidated high rise.

But in open court, he told a judge, that property owners are doing what they can to remedy the laundry list of issues from not working elevators, bed bugs, and trash accumulating in stairwells.

Extensive reporting by the WREG investigators has highlighted and exposed those ongoing problems.

According to the city of Memphis, police have been called to the senior living facility more than 2,000 times in the past two years.

On Tuesday, Serenity’s attorney filed a motion to withdraw from the case. He did not say why in open court. This would be at least the second attorney to bow out from the case in recent months.

He also said there is a possible buyer for not just Serenity Towers, but all properties owned by its parent company Millenia.

“We’re not going to stop until we get what we need for the tenants because it’s for them, not for me. They’re citizens of this city just like all of us are and they deserve the best,” said Marcus Ward, an attorney serving as a court-ordered special master between the city and Millenia.

The city’s chronic nuisance petition is set to be addressed in court in June.

Serenity is also set to be back before a judge next week to discuss more maintenance issues
