Atonement Lutheran Church to install new senior pastor [Religion Digest]

Oct. 7—The Rev. Katie E. Lyon will be installed as senior pastor of Atonement Lutheran Church, 5 Wyomissing Blvd., Wyomissing, on Oct. 15 during the 10 a.m. worship service.

Following worship, a reception will be held in Lundin Hall.

A native of Lynn, Mass., Lyon graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., with a bachelor's degree in sociology. She has a master of divinity degree with concentrations in urban and Latino ministries from the former Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, now United Lutheran Seminary.

Lyon also studied in Argentina and speaks Spanish fluently. She received training in mission development/congregational vitality and is a trained coach within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Lyon has lived in Berks County for over 19 years, serving in many congregations in Western Berks. She is married to Anthony Arana, a native of Peru, and they reside in Spring Township with their two daughters, Sofía Arana Lyon, 16, and Kaia Arana Lyon, 14.

----Reformation Lutheran Church, 3670 Perkiomen Ave., Exeter Township, will dedicate its newly installed solar array on Sunday at 10 a.m., between services. The congregation will gather at the portico for a blessing of the rooftop array funded by the congregation with a matching grant from the Berks County Community Foundation and Met-Ed/Penelec. The $75,000 solar project will help both the environment as well as provide utility cost savings to the congregation.

—Frieden's Lutheran Church, 537 N. Main St., Bernville, will observe Harvest Home on Sunday during the 10:30 a.m. worship service and will be collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items to be donated to the local food pantry. There also will be a soup luncheon on Monday from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., including two kinds of soup, fruit and dessert. It's free, but donations for local food pantries will be accepted.

—The Belleman's Church Mission Team, 3540 Belleman's Church Road, Centre Township, will be holding a sandwich sale on Oct. 19. The 10-inch sandwiches (ham, Italian or turkey) cost $8 and will be available for pickup at the church Fellowship Hall from 2-6 p.m. Orders are due by Thursday. —St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 5 Brooke Manor, Birdsboro, will hold a spaghetti dinner on Friday from 5-6:30 p.m. The free will donation will be used to benefit the church youth.

—The Walking Group of United Church of Christ of Robesonia, 301 W. Penn Ave., will meet today at 8:30 a.m. at Wernersville State Hospital on Sportman Road near Route 422. Bible study will be offered on Tuesday at 9 a.m. by Zoom and on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. by Zoom or in person. Call the Rev. Mary Etta Mest at 610-659-2775 for Zoom numbers. —St. John's Reformed Church will hold a basket raffle next Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the church's Fellowship Hall, 4001 Penn Ave., Sinking Spring. There also will be food and baked goods for sale.

—Advent Lutheran Church, 16 Telford Ave., West Lawn, bill hold its annual blessing of the pets on Sunday at 2 p.m. Meet at the front steps of the church. All pets must be leashed or in a cage or carrier. You also can bring a photo of the pet to be blessed.

—St. John's Lutheran Church, 45 N. Reading Ave., Boyertown, will have a free drive-through, take-out meal today from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. No registration necessary.

—On Sunday morning at 9:05, Christ Episcopal Church's adult forum will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 527 Washington St., Reading, and feature Melissa Adams of Trinity presenting "Being Aware of Book Banning." The Blessing of the Pets service will be held at 4 p.m. at Christ Episcopal, 435 Court St., Reading. On Tuesday, the Berks County Health Center mobile unit will be parked at the church from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking is available in the Abe Lincoln Hotel garage and in the M&T Bank lot, both located off of Washington Street. Handicap parking is located beside the church on Court Street.

—St. John's Gernant's Church (A Federated Congregation), 13 Gernant's Church Road, Ontelaunee Township, will have a friendship social after the 9:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday. Bible study will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Memorial Hall.

—St. Peter's United Church of Christ, 2901 Curtis Road, Spring Township, will host an Oktoberfest event in the pavilion behind the church today from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Bring a lawn chair to listen to live jazz. Hot dogs and sauerkraut, drinks and snacks will be provided. A goodwill offering will be accepted.
