Atmos Energy, Olive Branch ask families to cut back on natural gas

OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. — Atmos Energy and Olive Branch Public Works are asking customers to use their gas lines conservatively as they try to heat their homes.

Some customers actually saw low pressure from their gas lines earlier Wednesday. It is a concern for homeowners in Desoto County, who say they dealt with the same issue last year and worry the problem has not been resolved.

People who live in the Forest Hill, one of the largest subdivisions, say as many as 20,000 people in the city could been impacted by the low pressure in the gas lines.

They rely on gas to heat their homes, fireplaces and water and say the same thing happened last year during the cold weather.

Olive Branch Public works told WREG it had reached out to several residents who called with low pressure earlier, and all have reported that their service is restored. The city said gas service was never completely off in these areas, and low pressure was experienced for approximately two hours.

“They are very nice about it when you call. They’ll send somebody out and go through your home, check it, relight pilots if they can. So, they are polite about it, but the issue in general is not getting resolved. The houses that are built, it seems they are less able to keep the gas running to all the homes,” said Amber Coletta, who lives in Olive Branch.

Olive Branch is asking everyone continue to conserve where possible by setting thermostats to 65 degrees and not use all gas appliances at the same time.
