ASVOFF Festival Sets New Dates and Venue for 10th Anniversary
CHANGE OF SCENERY: The annual fashion-centric short film festival “A Shaded View on Fashion Film” has found a new venue for its 10th anniversary edition after Pierre Cardin withdrew from the event.
Originally set to take place from Sept. 7 to 9 at the 96-year-old designer’s Palais Bulles, located in the French city of Théoule-sur-Mer on the Mediterranean coast, the festival has been rescheduled for Oct. 12 to 14 at the Club de l’Etoile near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, organizers said, without proving additional details.
The jury, to be headed by Spanish actress Rossy de Palma, will include Rick Owens and his wife and muse Michèle Lamy; Jean Paul Gaultier; costume designer Eric Daman; Pamela Golbin, chief curator of fashion and textiles at Les Arts Décoratifs; artist Orlan, and film critic Elisabeth Quin, among others.
Founded in 2006 as “You Wear It Well,” the festival was renamed “A Shaded View on Fashion Film” in 2008 when it moved to Paris, to match the “A Shaded View on Fashion” blog created by Diane Pernet, a blogger and multihyphenate industry insider.
The three-day program will feature more than 80 films, including a collaboration with the film school École de la Cité and Casa 93, a free fashion school aimed at youths from disadvantaged neighborhoods, called ASVOFF10 x The Kids of the Banlieue.
It will also include a conversation between Lamy and her daughter Scarlett Rouge, to accompany the screening of “Beyond the Walls of Eden,” a 2016 film directed by Rouge and Saulo Madrid that focuses on the mother-daughter relationship.
In addition, the festival plans a tribute to John Malkovich as a director of three fashion films for Bella Freud. Among the many documentaries on show will be “Uninvited,” which focuses on streetwear designer Marcelo Burlon, and “A.K.A.,” photographer Michel Haddi’s 1994 film about Warhol star International Velvet.
Held at the Jeu de Paume museum, then at the Centre Pompidou until 2015, the festival focuses on short films in which fashion holds “a proper, definite role,” as stated by Pernet. In 2016 and 2017, it held international editions in Shanghai and Sofia, Bulgaria, as well as showcases during the Cannes Film Festival.
