ASU clay target team shoots for stars at regional contest

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The Angelo State University Rams Clay Target Team took home several individual and team medals, including two individual gold medals, from the ACUI/SCTP Lower Midwest Super Shoot competition at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio.

The competition featured over 200 competitors representing 16 colleges and universities in six states. Competitors took their shot at earning medals across three divisions: men’s, lady’s and team.

In the Lady’s Division, ASU’s Kennison Thomason, a junior from Flower Mound, won the Gold Medal in Sporting Clays and took second in Doubles Skeet, finishing third in the High overall standings. In the Men’s Division, ASU’s Samuel Davis, a freshman from Corpus Christi, won the Gold Medal in American Skeet.

In the team competition, members of the Rams Clay Target Team placed in the top three in five of the six contests, finishing fourth in the Team High Over All standings. ASU’s top placings, with the competing team members, included:

  • 2nd Place — Sporting Clays

    • Thomason, Nick Billington of Mertzon, Hunter Jordan of Concan, Logan Lotz of Wallisville, Kyle Shaw of Spring

  • 2nd Place — Doubles Trap

    • Davis, Lotz, Colton Arrigo of Pueblo, Colo., Hayden Casson of Glencoe, N.M., Riley Smothers of Utopia

  • 3rd Place — Doubles Skeet

    • Davis, Jordan, Thomason, Monte Rankin of Conroe, Jett Thompson of San Angelo

  • 3rd Place — American Skeet

    • Davis, Rankin, Smothers, Thompson, Trenton Christensen of Allen

  • 3rd Place — Super Sporting

    • Christensen, Davis, Lotz, Shaw, Smothers

The Rams Clay Target Team is a registered student organization that competes in regional and national contests sponsored by the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) and the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP). The team’s ASU staff sponsor is Kurtis Neal, director of human resources, and Rankin is the student president.
