Assault suspect wields rock at police officers during UTA incident before arrest

LEHI, Utah (ABC4) — One person was arrested in connection to an alleged assault at a Utah Transit Authority public transportation stop in Lehi on Wednesday, according to officials with the Lehi City Police Department.

Police officers were dispatched to a reported assault in progress at the UTA stop in the afternoon, according to a social media post from the department on March 6.

Lehi Police said two officers who were in the area — which was near Thanksgiving Point — were in an unmarked vehicle and were able to make contact with the suspect. In their post, the Lehi Police Department said the alleged assault took place at the “UTA Thanksgiving Point Trax Station,” but one commenter claimed that it was not a Trax station.

“The subject was non-cooperative, at one point picking up a rock, while demanding that officers stay back,” Lehi Police said in the post.

Police said the suspect dropped the rock when uniformed officers began arriving at the scene. In the social media post, Lehi Police said officers continued their attempts to de-escalate the situation by speaking with the suspect.

“That continued to be unsuccessful, with the subject ‘squaring up’ to officers several times,” officials wrote on social media.

Police reported that the suspect was taken into custody “after a brief scuffle” and after they had attempted to walk away from officers.

The victim of the reported assault stayed at the scene to provide a statement to officers, police said.

There is no further information at this time.
