Assault charges come after alleged domestic dispute turns violent
Feb. 13—A man was indicted by a Haywood County grand jury on a whole host of charges after allegedly assaulting a woman and law enforcement officers.
Robert Wayne Perry, 32, was hit with the charges, which stem from an alleged violent incident with a woman on Jan. 2. The indictments note that Perry not only struck the victim but also placed her in a chokehold, "specifically causing bruising on her neck."
In addition, Perry allegedly resisted arrest and even assaulted the arresting deputy from the Haywood County Sheriff's Office, "by striking him in the face" with his hand.
To make matters worse for Perry, he allegedly interfered with a witness — the initial victim — by "repeatedly contacting her by telephone" to discourage her from acting as a state's witness on three separate days, Jan. 2, Jan. 3 and Jan. 6.
Perry was ultimately charged with two counts of assault on a female, two counts of resisting a public officer, one count of assault on a government official, all misdemeanors, and assault inflicting physical injury by strangulation and three counts of interference with a state's witness, all felonies.
