Aspirus expands orthopedic services to Houghton Clinic

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WJMN) – Aspirus Health has expanded its orthopedic services to its Houghton clinic.

According to a press release from Aspirus, orthopedic services cater to individuals facing musculoskeletal issues, ranging from sports injuries to joint replacement. The team of board-certified orthopedic surgeons care for all ages and provides diagnosis and treatment for both surgical and non-surgical, including:

  • Care for all types of injuries and conditions affecting the ankle, elbow, foot, hand, hip, knee, shoulder, and wrist.

  • Orthopedic trauma/emergency care.

  • Joint revision surgery, joint replacement surgery, and complex bone fracture repair.

  • Treatment for osteoarthritis joint pain and sports medicine care.

Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Mark Kelley shares some ways you can prevent orthopedic injuries or conditions.

“Preventative wise, I’m a big proponent of stretching, big proponent of low impact, warm up and balancing,” said Kelley. “And then even when not preparing to compete, doing things like sitting in a chair and standing up without using your hands, going up and down stairs is kind of an exercise because it’s kind of a high-level exercise. And using our body weight, you don’t really have to use a lot of weight to just walk and be comfortable moving around on even ground and things.”

Kelly goes on to share when someone should see an orthopedic specialist.

“First of all, knowing that your joint or body part doesn’t feel normal is a very important first step and then deciding, well, should I play through this, or should I stop and see what’s going on? I think what we want to see is people just taking an assessment of what’s actually going on. Is there swelling? Is there pain with, you know, weight bearing or pain with pressure? And then taking appropriate measures to probably stop. And if it can be watched for a couple of days and iced then elevated and then trying to stretch or trying to walk or trying to see how things are. Rushing right back into a sport or an activity really is probably not smart for most people. Unless you can see a trainer or somebody else that’s probably going to be able to help you immediately,” added Kelley.

According to Aspirus, the expansion of services at Aspirus Houghton Clinic allows patients to receive a range of comprehensive care under one roof including family medicine, specialty care, pharmacy, core lab services, outpatient therapies and imaging services equipped with state-of-the-art technologies.
