Ask Ellen: How have severe reports stacked up for Michigan?

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan saw a fast start to severe weather season in 2024 when two tornadoes touched down on Feb. 27.

Tornadoes in February are rare for Michigan, but not unprecedented. This was followed by a completely quiet March and 24 wind and hail reports in April.

Tornado confirmed as EF1 in Calhoun County

There have been six tornado warnings issued already this year for Michigan. A warning is issued any time a storm looks likely to produce a tornado. This has been the most tornado warnings issued up to this time in the year since 2012.

Severe reports in Michigan are low compared to some surrounding states. Wisconsin also received tornadoes in February but has experienced relatively quiet weather. States to the south of Michigan have been much more active. This is typically the case early in the year as severe weather needs warm air to form, and warm air is usually further to the south early in the season.

Severe weather typically peaks in the summer months for Michigan with wind reports being the most frequently experienced.
