ASHFORD, Ala (WDHN) — The Dothan Houston County Library System (DHCLS) received two donations totaling $50,000 from Alabama State Senator and Hartford native Donnie Chesteen to support the new Ashford Library.

According to Director Chris Warren, one donation of $25,0000 will support the library’s programming and outreach programs. This includes after-school programs and classroom activities focused on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

“This started about two years ago,” said Sen. Chesteen about the library’s afterschool programs and classroom enrichment activities.  “I asked [Chris Warren, DHCLS Director] how we could support these programs, and he said that additional funding would have the greatest impact.  I’m proud to see how the staff have expanded these programs and proud to support the library’s efforts to help our local students.”

Warren says the second donation of $25,000 will go to the capital campaign, an ongoing project to refurbish the former MidSouth Bank IT/Data Center in the heart of Downtown Ashford for the new location of the Ashford Library.

The renovated space will hold a collection of 20,000 items, a 500-square-foot program area, dedicated space for children and their families, and more.
