Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office charges accused drug dealer from Gonzales

GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) — A man from Ascension Parish is facing multiple charges after he was arrested on Tuesday, April 9.

Andrew McWhirter, 20, of Gonzales, was charged with possession with the intent to distribute fentanyl, two counts of possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, possession of mushrooms, possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal use of weapons, obstruction of justice and three counts of simple assault.

According to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a Prairieville home to investigate a domestic disturbance on Tuesday, April 9. Deputies who responded were told by residents that McWhirter left the area after threatening them.

The sheriff’s office said a call came in about shots fired in the area of Joe Severio and Cemetery Road in Prairieville. There were no reported injuries.

Deputies found a suspect vehicle on Highway 621 and determined its owner was McWhirter.

After a traffic stop, McWhirter admitted to deputies that he had tossed a handgun and drugs after fleeing, according to APSO. During a search, the gun was found as well as 11 grams of fentanyl, deputies said.

A search warrant was obtained and McWhirter’s home was searched by deputies. APSO said deputies seized a large amount of marijuana and mushroom bars.

McWhirter was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail.
