'Arrested Development' star's weird infatuation with drawing pictures of Trump

Alia Shawkat, who played Maeby on Arrested Development and now plays Dory on Search Party, stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to show the host drawings she did of Donald Trump six years ago, back when he was just your average billionaire reality TV star. The drawings could be compared to the styles of illustrators Ralph Steadman or Al Hirschfeld. Shawkat said of the artworks — drawn with a quick hand and featuring a sketchy look — “His look was perfect for this kind of sketchy, angry, ink-based drawings.” Colbert said, “He does look hastily put together.”

Little did Shawkat know, Trump would become president of the U.S. When she did the drawings, he was just the perfect pen-and-ink art subject because of his particular look. “I was obsessed with the nature of his skin and, like, how everything seemed to be like a balloon shooting out of it,” she said.

But maybe the sketchy style works so perfectly because of the most unique thing about the Donald — his hair. Shawkat said, “The way I was drawing with the ink, like the hair just came out, you know, with one swoop. And I was like, ‘Well, there it is.'”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 on CBS.
