Arrest made in gang-related shooting that wounded girl, 3, in Orange County
Authorities have arrested a 20-year-old man who is accused of opening fire on a car in Santa Ana, wounding a toddler last month.
Angel Castillo was booked on charges of attempted homicide and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, the Santa Ana Police Department announced on Monday.
The shooting happened on the night of Feb. 25 when, according to police, Castillo fired shots at a white Nissan Altima carrying two adults and a 3-year-old girl in the area of East 15th and North Spurgeon streets.
The girl suffered a gunshot wound to her back.
The driver rushed the child to Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) where she underwent several surgeries and was initially listed in critical condition.
At a news conference the following day, police said the shooting was gang-related, and the intended target was the victim’s mother’s boyfriend, who was in the front passenger seat.
Castillo also faces a charge of committing a crime for the benefit of a criminal street gang.
He was arraigned in Orange County Superior Court on Monday.
