Arrest made in death of 78-year-old San Leandro gas station attendant

(KRON) — A suspect has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of a 78-year-old man who worked at a gas station, the San Leandro Police Department said Monday. San Leandro PD responded to the Speedway gas station located at 14880 E. 14th Street at 12:15 p.m. on Feb. 22 on a report of someone with head injuries.

At the scene, officers located the victim, 78-year-old Wadih Badran. Badran, an employee of the gas station, was pronounced dead by Alameda County Fire Department personnel.

Witness statements cited by SLPD indicate the suspect, 40-year-old Dennis Lee of Stockton, got into a verbal dispute with Badran. Lee was reportedly loitering behind the business.

As the confrontation escalated, Lee came up behind the victim and pushed him into a pole, causing head and neck trauma. This proved to be fatal, according to police.

The suspect was last seen fleeing into a nearby neighborhood. An extensive canvass of the area was conducted by patrol officers and detectives using surveillance footage and witness accounts.

Lee’s identity was determined by investigators through surveillance footage, Flock Public Safety footage and forensic evidence. Lee was arrested on Friday near his Stockton residence with the assistance of San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Police also executed search warrants at his home and at his parent’s residence in Castro Valley. Officers recovered clothing worn during the alleged homicide along with two illegally possessed firearms.

On Monday, the Alameda County District Attorney charged Lee with murder and weapons violations.
