CHP did not make it clear if Dorantes was the driver of the Mazda CX-9 involved in the crash. The solo vehicle collision happened around 5:14 a.m. at the I-680 northbound lanes at the Highway 242 split near Concord.

Dorantes is being held at the Martinez Detention Facility on charges of manslaughter, felony hit and run, and child abuse, according to CHP. His bail is set at $200,000.

According to CHP, the SUV was traveling northbound on I-680 when it left the roadway through the dirt median that separates the two freeways. The vehicle then overturned multiple times; there were six occupants in the SUV at the time of the crash.

The girl died at the scene.

At least five of the occupants were related, authorities said. The 9-year-old girl’s mother, 13-year-old sister and two 17-year-old cousins were among those inside the car. On Wednesday, CHP said they were taken to the hospital and are all in stable condition.

It is unknown if Dorantes is related to the occupants of the car.
