Arrest made in 2023 shooting near Veterans Parkway

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — An aggravated assault suspect was taken into custody over a year after a shooting in the area of Veterans Parkway, according to the Columbus Police Department.

Police say David Lamar Barnes was arrested on warrants of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Barnes was taken to Muscogee County Jail.

The charges stems back to Feb. 10, 2023, when officers heard a gunshot around the 6400 block of Veterans Parkway. A victim was not found at the scene, but police were advised Wesley Gilmore had arrived at Piedmont North after being shot.

Gilmore was listed as stable yet serious condition and taken to an Atlanta hospital.

Patrol found the vehicle and handed the investigation over to the Violent Crimes Unit, who identified Barnes as the suspect.

Barnes’ preliminary hearing is set for Friday, May 10 at 9 a.m.
