Around 10,000 without power in West Virginia

GHENT, WV (WVNS) — Approximately 10,000 people are still without power after rain and high winds crossed the state on Thursday, April 11, 2024.

Strong winds complicate power restoration efforts through Saturday

According to a Storm Response Update from Appalachian Power, crews are out looking at and repairing outages caused by the weather. Although outages reached an estimated 18,000 customers, about 10,000 customers remain without power in West Virginia on the morning of Friday, April 12, 2024.

Outages affected approximately 500 or more customers in Fayette, Kanawha, Boone, Marshall, Lincoln, Ohio, and Mingo counties. Around 4,000 customers do not have power in Virginia, with most outages in Giles, Roanoke, Bedford, and Patrick counties.

More than 300 locations need repaired, but the amount of repairs needed could go up as wind gusts continue and crews examine the damage.

Appalachian Power stated that estimated restoration times for around 90 percent of customers without power is 11:00 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 2024, however many might have power restored sooner. Locations that need extensive repairs may have extended restoration times.

Although crews are working on repairing outages, the possibility of more wind and rain could add to the number of outages in the state, and repairs could be delayed if the weather causes crews to not be able to safely make repairs.
