Army veteran celebrates 107th birthday in Santa Rosa

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (KRON) – A Santa Rosa man celebrated a milestone birthday on Friday. Bob Aumiller turned 107 years old.

His fellow residents at Brookdale Chanate Senior Living Center in Santa Rosa had a surprise celebration for him.

There have been plenty of milestone birthdays celebrated at the senior center, but Friday was the first time a resident celebrated their 107th trip around the sun.

It’s why Health and Wellness Director Heidi Gallagher wanted to do something special for Aumiller.

“He’s kind of quiet, but when you engage him he has a really wicked personality. He’s really sweet and we really enjoy having him here,” she said.

Aumiller wasn’t exactly thrilled about all the attention, or to get the attention of the news, but he did let his grandson Alex Aumiller-Twig sing his praises.

“I think for me it’s more about how he chose to live his life with his kids and his family and the people around him,” he said.

The 107-year-old was a staff sergeant in the Army during World War II. He was stationed in Europe and even fought in the Battle of the Bulge – a living chapter of U.S. history.

“Pretty refreshing to speak with somebody who literally lived in an era that is gone and that he can still speak to that and explain what happened,” Gallagher said.

Joined by his family, friends, fellow residents and a service member of the Army, the man of few words chose two to show his appreciation.

“Thank you.”
