After armed threats, man barricaded himself in Desert Hot Springs home, police say

A Desert Hot Springs man brandished a gun and knife at people Saturday morning, then refused to come out of a house for an hour when officers came to arrest him, city police said.

No one was injured, and 35-year-old Jonathan Ginns eventually came out and was arrested, Detective Sgt. Christopher Saucier said in a press release.

Officers got a call about 8:15 a.m. of a disturbance in the 11900 block of Verbena Drive.

Police said a man had forced his way into the home of people he knew, brandished a gun and threatened people with a knife before leaving.

Detectives found his car about a mile and a half away, at a home in the 13300 block of Hidalgo Street. When officers showed up to serve an arrest warrant, everyone else inside came out, but Ginns refused, Saucier said.

Negotiations failed, and helicopters from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department and California Highway Patrol hovered while the sheriff's SWAT team was called.

Before it arrived, Saucier said, Ginns came out and surrendered. He was booked on multiple charges, including kidnapping, assault with a firearm and criminal threats.
