Armed teen in car apprehended after officer-involved shooting in Los Angeles

Los Angeles Police Department officers were involved in a shooting with a teen suspect in Boyle Heights on Sunday night, authorities say.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department Public Information Officer, officers with the Hollenbeck Division were in the area of 1st and Vicente Fernández streets near Mariachi Plaza around 10:20 p.m. Sunday when they observed a pickup truck stopped in the middle of the road with its doors open.

When officers exited their patrol unit to investigate, they heard gunfire break out near Mariachi Plaza, LAPD confirmed. Two males were then seen running towards the officers.

The officers ordered the suspects to get on the ground, however, one of them, later identified as 18-year-old Gabriel Gomez, continued to run in the officers’ direction and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

Gomez fled but was apprehended about a block away after a brief foot pursuit, LAPD confirmed on X, formerly Twitter. A loaded 9mm semiautomatic Polymer 80 ghost gun was located and collected from the scene, authorities said, adding that the gun was found with a loaded magazine and a live round “partially lodged in the chamber.”

When officers returned to the where the truck was parked with its doors open, they discovered it was no longer at the scene. Neither the vehicle nor the second suspect who was with Gomez were located, police said.

No injuries to officers or community members were reported.
