Arkansas Symphony Orchestra receives $40,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A federal agency just presented the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra with 40,000 reasons to play a happy tune.

A representative for the orchestra announced Thursday that it has received a $40,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The grant comes as the orchestra prepares for its 58th season and the one-year anniversary of its Stella Boyle Smith Music Center home in Little Rock.

NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson said the orchestra harmonized with the NEA mission.

“Projects like the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s exemplify the creativity and care with which communities are telling their stories, creating connection, and responding to challenges and opportunities in their communities — all through the arts,” Jackson said. “So many aspects of our communities, such as cultural vitality, health and wellbeing, infrastructure, and the economy, are advanced and improved through investments in art and design, and the National Endowment for the Arts is committed to ensuring people across the country benefit.”

Orchestra CEO Christian Littlejohn is grateful for the support of the NEA.

“Arkansas Symphony Orchestra is grateful to the National Endowment for the Arts for this generous grant. We cannot wait to open the new ASO Stella Boyle Smith Music Center this fall with a weekend of community activities for Arkansans of all ages,” Littlejohn said. “This grant will enable us to celebrate a year of community building and partnerships with world-class musicians and composers.”

The grant was part of a $994,025 grant package awarded to six Arkansas organizations during the NEA’s second round of 2024 funding. Five of the recipients were in Little Rock and the sixth was in Hot Springs.
