Arkansas State Police investigating suspicious death of prison inmate in Lee County

LEE COUNTY, Ark. – The Arkansas State Police are investigating the Friday morning death of an inmate at the East Arkansas Regional Unit in Lee County.

ASP officials said they found 25-year-old inmate Tevis Maxwell unresponsive in his cell just after 6 a.m.

Officials attempted lifesaving measures on Maxwell but failed to save him. Authorities said there were indications that he might have been strangled.

Police said Maxwell was in a two-man cell and his inmate is being questioned about his death.

According to ASP officials, Maxwell was serving a 25-year sentence for rape, commercial burglary, second-degree battery, aggravated assault on a correctional employee and two counts of robbery. He was sentenced in March of 2019 in Hempstead County.
