Arkansas Game and Fish Commission holding Lake Conway clean-up days

FAULKNER COUNTY, Ark. – The Lake Conway Renovation project is underway and now what has been underwater for decades is coming to light, including trash and debris.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is holding cleanups where volunteers can come take part in the renovations.

Walking through mud with their eye peeled, volunteers like Glen Jackson are helping the Lake Conway Renovation Project through Arkansas Game and Fish clean-up days.

“You’re able to go out here, you’re able to get on the bank, and you’re able to pull stuff up,” Jackson said

It’s the first time since before the lake was created that the shoreline has been exposed, and now you can see what past generations left behind.

“A lot of tires,” Jackson said, “We have also noticed a lot of computer parts, a lot of shingles and roofing nails.”

Nicholas Feltz, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission fishery supervisor for the area, said everyday littering for the past 75 years has created the need for clean-up days, as well as the tornado that came through the area about 10 years ago.

“The big components that we’ve seen, glass bottles, aluminum cans, tires, metal bars, and sheet metal,” Feltz said.

Feltz said because of all of the trash, the task is one they can’t do alone.

“We really need the community to come out and take this as an opportunity, all the trash that’s exposed is not something you can get at during normal water levels,” Feltz said.

In just the first two days of the cleanup, dozens of bags of trash have been collected and taken off the shoreline. Jackson says he is ready to do it again to help restore the lake to its former glory.

“it’s just a nice feeling to know that you’re doing something,” Jackson said.

The clean up continues April 20, and April 21. The AGFC will announce clean-up days for the coming months soon.
