Arizona's unemployment rate drops to 7.8 percent in May as 8 of 11 major sectors add jobs

PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona's unemployment rate has dropped to 7.8 percent.

State Department of Administration economists reported Thursday that the 7.8 percent jobless rate last month compares with 7.9 percent in April and 8.4 percent in May 2012.

Economists say eight of the 11 major sectors in Arizona added jobs last month with construction leading the way with 6,200 jobs.

However, the state had a net loss of 200 jobs in May as government lost 10,000 jobs while the private sector gained 9,800 jobs.

Losses in government were seen in local higher education as they reduced staffing levels for the summer break.
