Arizona safety Scottie Young arrested on assault charge (UPDATED)
Arizona safety Scottie Young Jr. was arrested Wednesday and cited for domestic violence assault.
According to the Arizona Daily Star, Young, a freshman who has been a starter for the Wildcats this season, is facing a misdemeanor charge of “assault/knowingly causing injury.” The University told the Star in a statement that the “other party involved” in the alleged domestic violence incident was also charged.
“We’re aware that Scottie Young was charged with a misdemeanor, as was the other party involved. We are working with the university’s Dean of Students Office to gather more information,” the statement said.
Young, 18, is due in court Oct. 11. Details of the incident became available Friday afternoon. The incident happened after the woman, whom Young has been dating off-and-on, went to his dorm room to get her laptop. From the Arizona Daily Star:
The woman told police Young took her backpack and threw it towards the elevator, during which she took the opportunity to try to knock on the resident advisor’s door. Before she could do so, Young grabbed her left hand to pull it away from the door and spit in her face. Police confirmed that her hand was “slightly swollen” and photographed her injuries after calling for UA paramedics, the report says.
Witnesses corroborated her story, according to the report.
Young, a native of San Diego, California, has played in all four games for the Wildcats so far, totaling 20 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss. He also registered a sack against UTEP.
Arizona, which is 2-2 so far this season, is off this weekend. Its next game is at Colorado next Saturday.
