SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A La Mesa woman drowned in a popular Arizona lake over the weekend, according to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon arrival, authorities learned a woman had jumped off a boat on the lake to go swimming, but her life jacket came loose because it was not properly secured and fell off. The sheriff’s office says she panicked and went below the surface.

Divers from the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office’s Dive Rescue and Recovery Team, along with a Careflight helicopter, searched the area but were unable to locate her right away. Authorities say the woman was later found 42 feet under the water using sonar equipment.
